Public school students across New York City kicked off their summer internships by experiencing what it is like to be the BOSS FOR A DAY. PENCIL’s city-wide event BOSS FOR A DAY involved hundreds of high school students visiting businesses across New York City to gain exposure to a successful workplace and speak directly with business leaders about their first job experiences and how to make the most of a summer internship. American Airlines and PENCIL brought education out of the classroom and into the workplace December 3 with the culmination of a semester-long partnership program that brought 65 Astoria sixth graders to John F. Kennedy International Airport for an exclusive tour of the facility and an opportunity to gain hands-on career experience at an early age. Read more here.
As part of the PENCIL School Partnership with American Airlines and IS 141Q in Astoria, Queens, a group of 65 sixth-graders enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the airline’s terminal and hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport. From the cockpit to the baggage claim, these students had a first-class culmination to a semester’s worth of science, technology, engineering and mathematics supplementary career skills building and awareness. As part of Twitter’s global day of service, #FridayForGood, volunteers from Twitter’s New York headquarters helped students at Manhattan Business Academy and The Brooklyn Latin School practice interviewing skills. Opportunities like these fall under PENCIL’s Points of Engagement, tailored employee engagement opportunities offered by PENCIL to provide our corporate partners with single-day, student-centered volunteer events that directly impact New York City public schools.

Rather than bring business and civic leaders into schools to serve as principals for a day, we brought hundreds of NYC public school students into businesses for a day, to give them exposure to actual workplace environments and the successful business professionals who work there.
