How did you become a part of PENCIL’s programming?

Becoming a PENCIL/ Ladders for Leaders Alumni has led me to myriad opportunities. After attending an informative LinkedIn event, I automatically connected with Risa [Associate Director of PENCIL’s Internship Program]. Earlier this year, I collaborated with Risa and spoke at both FIT x PENCIL informational sessions. It was a great pleasure to inform as well as inspire students to take the initiative in pursuing an exceptional internship through PENCIL/ Ladders for Leaders Programs. Most recently, I was invited to participate on the Alumni Panel and shared my experiences with future participants of the program.

What are your thoughts for a future career?
I am fascinated by the power of creativity in the beauty industry. By following my passion, I aspire to become a successful beauty marketer and product developer within the cosmetics, fragrances and skincare categories.

Why are the Ladders for Leaders and PENCIL programs important to you?

These programs provide unparalleled internship opportunities catered towards one’s interests and it is paid! What else could you ask for? The team is super accommodating and supportive throughout the entire process. From the pre-employment training to fulfilling two positions at my internship, I have benefited tremendously in strengthening my professional capacity.

Any Advice for students currently in their first internships?

Now that you have secured your first internship position, you should most definitely set short and long-term goals for yourself, such as potential achievements and acquiring new skill sets. At each of my internships, I have always challenged myself with different projects and initiated objectives to complete them accordingly which have resulted in rewarding outcomes. Also, it’s pivotal to accept all constructive feedback in any field as it would only help you to improve your abilities.

Any additional thoughts on your experience?

During the beginning of the internship placement process, I remember Katje [PENCIL’s Senior Program Officer] selecting my resume from the pile and saying that I have one of the strongest resumes. From there she worked diligently with me to secure the best suited internship of my interest. As a PENCIL Alumni, I am grateful for all the connections and opportunities that I continually receive from this program. With the support I have garnered from the very beginning towards the end of the program, it is one of the best programs for an internship experience.

“Thank you PENCIL and Ladders for Leaders for all your support!” -Diane Lachhman
